I don’t normally do a lot of book reviews. When I was e-mailed about The Overlooked Generation by Shannon Perry, I really didn’t hesitate. I really wanted to read this book when I saw what the book was about- Parenting Teens And Tweens In A Complicated Culture.
I’m in the middle of raising a tween all by myself. I need all the information I can get. This book covers anything I could have thought of and more. Shannon Perry is not only a trained counselor, a former school teacher, she is a full-time conference speaker. She uses her nearly 20 years of working with children and their parents to help her write this book. I like that someone that has helped other parents is writing the book, not just someone doing some research.
As I said above, the book covers anything I could have thought of. It goes over what tweens and teens are wearing, dieting issues, curfews, sexual relations, friendships, bullies, technology, drinking/drugs, communication and self esteem. I was really interested in the bullies chapter. I always worry about Gracie being bullied. I think it is because I was bullied when I was in school. Did you know that 90% of 4th thru 8th grade students being victims of bullies and that a victim of bullying is twice as likely to take his or her own life compared to someone who is not a victim? I didn’t know these facts until Perry brought them out her book.
This isn’t just a normal self help book, even though it’s help for your tweens and teens. Shannon Perry brings God out in each and every chapter, basically every page. She gives you a scriptural way to respond to each incidence she brings out. She also three questions at the end of each chapter called Parent Pause. It gives us a chance to think about what Perry went over.
The video that goes with this book just made me cry- you have to check it out!
Once I read a book, I’m normally done with it. I don’t think that will be the case with The Overlooked Generation. I think I will be using this book as a tool for the remainder of Gracie’s school years. I highly recommend you check this book out!
