Gracie and I were sent a My First Period Kit & DVD to review. I’m so glad we were given this chance. Gracie already knew about periods, I had talked to her some about them. But this DVD was so thorough. I really can’t say enough good things about it, but I will try here in a few minutes. First, I want to know- Have you had “the talk” with your daughter? I started talking to Gracie when she was young, when she would ask questions- I would answer them honestly and not avoid them. I wouldn’t give more information than she needed at the time, but I didn’t want her asking some kid on the playground and getting the wrong answer 🙂
I just feel if you have open communication with your children, they know that they can ask you whatever they need to. I don’t make her feel funny for asking anything. I answer whatever it is with a straight face and I answer it with the proper words. One day Gracie and I were talking and I honestly can’t remember what we were talking about. But my husband was living at the time, and he walked thru her room and heard me answering her question. He called me into the living room and asked me what I was doing. I told him that I wanted her to be able to ask me whatever she needed to know and not have to go to her friends to find out. He agreed I was doing the right thing.
The DVD, as I said was wonderful. Dr de Freitas does a great job of explaining things that some parents may just have a hard time talking about to their daughters. She also helps bring out points that we may not realize the girls have questions about or are wondering about. Like how to wrap the wings around your panties.
The first thing Dr. de Frietas talked about in the video was Private vs Secret. I really liked that. She went on to say that secrets get told to people, if something is private it’s kept between you and someone you trust. She also compared puberty to the life of a butterfly. She said the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. I would have never thought to have used that example, but it was a good one and Gracie liked it too.
She said that our amazing brain controlled all of our body functions. Our bodies all change at different times but it’s because of our amazing brain. And all of our bodies are different and that’s normal because of our amazing brain.
She had a question/answer session after she explained about periods. She showed the girls how to put pads on panties. She told girls what to do if they went to the bathroom and didn’t have a pad. She even explains what the boxes are in the bathroom.
She also gives an age-appropriate talk on the birds and bees. I have answered Gracie’s questions on this too as they have come up. She’s always been interested in babies and where babies come from. So, she has had several questions. Dr. de Freitas does a very good job at handling this topic too.
Girls are growing up WAY too early these days. We as parents need to do our part to keep our daughters safe and healthy. I want my daughter to stay a kid, there’s too big a rush for kids to grow up.
I really liked this kit. Dr de Freitas does a wonderful job at discussing puberty and your daughters period. Even if you have already had this talk with your daughter (as I had), this DVD will bring out points that give your daughter a chance to ask you specific questions. She’ll go- I didn’t know that’s how you did that! Like with the wings 🙂
I really suggest you buy this you have a daughter between the ages of 9-12. You can buy the DVD by visiting My First Period Kit and DVD You can also visit Dr. de Freitas’ blog by clicking here. She asks some pretty good questions on there that makes you think!
