I’ve talked about Gracie having allergies at Sonya’s Happenings… before. The poor kid is allergic to everything except animals, well she is allergic to cock roaches. We don’t keep those as pets those, lol!
Gracie really is allergic to a lot. She has been tested 3 different times by her allergist. She is allergic to certain types of grass, oak trees, pine trees, mold, ragweed, dust mites, cock roaches, pollen, smoke, mosquito bites, etc. We try VERY hard to steer clear of anything she allergic to. Avoidance is the best policy for us. We live in Arkansas though and it is SPRING – AKA Allergy Season! Come on, she has to walk to her car. We only have a 2 car garage.
At our previous house we only had a carport. We could walk outside and our cars would be coated in pollen. So you know how much was in the air. Arkansas weather is notoriously unpredictable. She is her sickest in the Spring and Fall. When I bought this home, I made sure that there was NO trees, NO shrubbery, nothing. We have one of the bigger yards in the area but it doesn’t compare to our double lot that we had before. Gracie does not walk the subdivision if anyone is mowing. We don’t mow our own yard. We do that so that we don’t have to store any type of lawn equipment.
Gracie takes all of her preventive medications. She doesn’t have to take allergy shots anymore, although she did for years. We do keep our home clean and free of dust. We keep the air vents to the central heat and air changed and clean. We don’t keep our windows open (which I would love to do). I do ride in my car with the sunroof open but she very rarely rides in my car anymore. She always take a shower at night time. That helps to get all the crud off that she’s accumulated on her skin or hair though out the day. We keep an eye on the pollen count forecast for our area. We also have our yard sprayed for mosquitoes. She doesn’t stay outside after dark because it is ARKANSAS and a mosquito will find it’s way to her sweet smelling skin somehow, regardless of whether we’ve had the yard sprayed or not.
Gracie deals with a lot because of everything she is allergic to but she is a superstar and has learned how to handle the problem. If you are new to dealing with allergies or just discovering you or your child has allergies, there are many resources for you to refer to. I found Dr. Summit Shah, your local weather website for pollen counts, your local hospital for community news are just a few places to search.
Also, always be willing to turn to friends. You honestly NEVER know who has experience with whatever problem you are going through until you ask. You can always email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or just post below if you have a question about allergies and I will do my best to answer. If I don’t have an answer, I’ll try to lead you to a place or person that does. Please- visit your personal Doctor too. That’s the best advice.
