Some of you may remember that our home burned in 2014 and was a total loss. We had lived in our home for 22 years. It was a devastating loss to us especially since Gracie’s Dad had just passed away in 2011. It just about did us in emotionally.
If it hadn’t been for our smoke alarms, I’m not sure we would have made it out OK. We did make it out fine though, even all the animals. They seemed to instinctively follow us out of the burning home. I’m very thankful that I always followed my rule of thumb of changing the batteries on the smoke alarms every 6 months. I know that they saved us.
First, I had to get us a couple of changes of clothes, remember, we lost everything. The Red Cross did call the next day to see if we needed anything but we were very fortunate to have good insurance and didn’t need anything. Then our insurance company put us up in a hotel and found a kennel for our dogs. Then right away, I started searching for a transitional home or apartment for Gracie and me until I could decide what to do about our house. I did find a nice little apartment and Gracie was able to keep Katrina with us. We ended up staying there about three months.
It was a very emotional time for me, very emotional. Not only had I just lost my husband a few years prior, I now had lost all of our possessions. Wedding albums, baby items, all of Don’s items, we just lost everything. It was a very tough time. I was extremely luck to have a small fireproof safe and everything in it was saved. These included each and every ring Don had ever given me. I had them put up for Gracie, so I’m very glad that they were spared.
I decided that we didn’t want to rebuild on the same land that our house had been on. I thought we needed a fresh start. Gracie thought that was a very good idea too. Oh, I just didn’t know the hassle we were in for! We had so many specifications that we were looking for in a house.
1. I didn’t want it on the bad side of town
2. I didn’t want ANY carpet (the dogs)
3. I needed a fence
4. I wanted a low maintenance yard
Well, I looked at a ton of houses and decided I was just going to have to settle and make due with the best one I could find. All of a sudden one popped up for sale with EVERYTHING I wanted (and more). I jumped on this house. This house was just meant to be for us. I dearly love it and so does Gracie (and now Michael).
Do you know what I didn’t think about the whole entire time? Financing. I don’t know if it was because I was still crazy from the fire or I was use to Don taking care of the BIG MONEY items or what. Now, I had to think about financing. I relied on a relative to advice but places like The Associates Home Loan of Florida are great places to always be aware of!
